This has been a very helpful thread for me, because I have overlooked FabFilter products for a long time. If I were in the market for new plugs right now Pro Q and Saturn and Timeless would certainly be on the list somewhere. Try the demos! I think you can do one at a time, and it's thirty days (much better than Ozone's 10) which is plenty of time to experiment. Timeless on the other hand has no ozone equivalent, and would require quite a bit more work to emulate. Saturn does a lot of stuff, but the Ozone exciter is pretty flexible too and you could do most of the modulation stuff fairly easily in Reaper. I did the Fabfilter 30 day demo, and ended up being more impressed with Saturn and Timeless than the eq/comp/limiter etc. That's the best way to hear the difference in my opinion, and not be distracted by a pretty gui. If you get the demo, try eq'ing a track using all Ozone eqs, then copy the settings to Pro Q (and reaEq if you want)and render out an A/B comparison (easily done from the project fx manager).

Ozone does M/S processing too, though, doesn't it? I think the biggest difference between the Ozone and Fab eq's is probably the oversampling, which if I'm remembering correctly Ozone's doesn't do. Finally, a plugin can't make you a better mixer or something, but can make your life a lot easier. I bought both Equality and EQuick because the price was really good when bundled (if I had to choose it would be Equality but EQuick is also very useful (the interface reminds on ProQ a bit)). IOW, it's better to have only one great eq and use saturation plugs when necessary than to have 20 so-so eq's. I'm convinced everybody should have one great, clean parametric eq and not try to save money there (especially if one makes a living doing this or even if it's a side job for someone). after some time I got bored and started using other, "color" eqs again (but Equality/EQuick is still always the first eq on a track). There's a lot of mixes I did with Equality only and when I needed some color I was using saturation plugs instead of choosing from 10 different eq emulations. You'll be surprised how much better high end eqs sound don't matter if you boost a lot or cut or whatever. As bluzkat said - try and compare (and I will say the same for DMG Audio eqs). M/S and L/R processing aren't so important - there are plugins that will let you do that with ReaEq (btw, MEqualizer does M/S and is probably the worst eq I've ever heard (big problems with bottom end), it's OT, but MCompressor is also kinda disappointing but some other plugs in that bundle are great ).

BTW, with the time ReaEQ has become better, and I still think it's a great eq (not only for a free plugin - look at the Q10's price (of course everybody is buying Q10 for cheap now, but it wasn't always like that). Don't try to boost with it, though, at least not more than a couple of db. It will let you clean the tracks nicely (just like Q10, it has only 2nd order filters, very simple shelves, but it can have very narrow q and sounds very clean). Which also means my ears aren't as trained at mastering/sound quality/ etc.Īhhh, didn't realize Pro-Q does M/S editing. Mind you - take my opinion with a grain of salt - I don't have enough experience to even USE things like the harmonic exciter or dithering that are offered in Ozone. If they are as good as Pro Q, it would definitely be worth the extra $$ *if* you have it!! :) For compression and limiting I use Voxengo (because those plugs costs way less than fabfilter, but also have nice easy interfaces)so I can't speak to any of the other Fabfilter stuff. It really is just so easy to use and sounds fantastic. The only Fabfilter tool I use is Pro Q, and it's all over EVERYTHING. Not sure if it's just the LOOK of the thing, but something about it seems very unfriendly to me - I could never seem to spend enough time in it to overcome the learning curves.

Ozone debate -> I just sold my ozone 5 license on KVR last week.
